Introduction to Mental Health

This unique course looks at how people who are affected by mental health problems experience their world, and how those about them can help. The training unfolds through a series of true stories that are narrated and dramatised before the group. This helps bring the material to life, and allows participants to consider the experience of a variety of mental health problems both from their own perspective, and that of the service user.
This approach provides a stark contrast to the psychiatric emphasis on disorder, and emphasises the experience of the whole person, whilst providing a fascinating journey through the perplexing world of mental health.

Target Group

No prior training in mental health is assumed, although it is helpful if participants work in similar backgrounds. The course will be adapted to reflect the experience, work roles and settings of the participants.

Aim

This is a practice-based course aimed at helping participants to work more effectively and appropriately with people who experience a range of serious mental health problems.

Content

The course is usually run over one or two days, as follows
The one-day course includes:
The two-day course includes
Everything on the one-day course, plus Each story begins with the survivor’s own experience, moves on to the experience of those who worked with them, and ultimately illustrates the skills and processes necessary for triumphing over adversity. The application of learning is further facilitated by extensive course notes, and following the course, participants can follow up any issues raised via an on-line discussion forum.

”Experiencing Mental Health Problems” is ideal for whole teams and organisations, including volunteers and service users, and can be delivered to groups of between 9 and 36 participants.
